Aged skin has many defined characteristics: loss of elasticity, hormonal discolorations, dryness, dehydration, sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles and broken capillaries. Every woman is different and the approaches you take to a great anti-aging treatment are not the same for women as a whole.
Initially, chemical peels and microdermabrasion were at the forefront of progressive treatments. These two types of exfoliation are still used and valued because they give the skin a more youthful appearance by diminishing fine lines and evening the skin tone.
Unfortunately, many forms of exfoliation, such as over-the-counter exfoliants, prescription exfoliants and professional microdermabrasion are being overused and may be the culprit for broken capillaries and thinning of the skin. When the skin becomes thinner it appears to lose it structural integrity resulting in premature aging.
As anti-aging skin care treatments evolved, so did new, hydrating and safe exfoliation treatments. Ultrasound is an amazing technology that allows for gentle exfoliation and aids in product penetration, for an immediate result. Ultrasound can be combined with other therapies or it can follow a specific protocol, for instance a therapy designed for acne or rosacea.
The skin is exfoliated in the first step of ultrasonic cleaning, which is known as the peeling phase. Ultrasonic vibrations move water molecules over the skin at a high frequency, causing changes known as cavitation. Cavitation cleans the skin’s follicles and removes cellular debris.
In the infusion phase, an ultrasonic instrument is used to apply treatment products. Heat from this treatment stimulates collagen production and accelerates blood circulation, which enhances nutrient absorption by skin cells. Cellular debris, sebum and toxins are also removed more efficiently when circulation is increased.
In the microcurrent therapy or patting phase of the treatment, the skin is normalized with a very mild electrical current, which restores the natural electrical charge of skin cells. The ultrasound wand is used to lightly stroke the skin, which promotes healing and cellular regeneration, effectively rejuvenating the skin.
Ultrasonic facials should be performed once weekly until 6-8 treatments have been completed. Maximum results are noted at this time. Afterwards, follow-up maintenance ultrasonic facials should be scheduled once every 4-8 weeks. Because they don’t irritate the skin, ultrasonic facials can be combined with microdermabrasion or other procedures.
Ultrasonic facials are safe for most people. However, individuals with autoimmune disorders, heart conditions, pacemakers or cancer should check with their doctors before scheduling ultrasonic facials.
